O'Neil was a student at high school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. Her vocal performance impressed the panel of judges and she received a promotion to an audition in the 100th place. Her performance was highly applauded by jury. But, O'Neil suffered a significant drop in her Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for bottom 3, and the bottom 2. They were stunned by the decision and proclaimed to the public that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil was never in the third place again following an impressive string of performances. O'Neil and Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and was the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the Idol history. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was made public by Premier Paul Martin immediately.
