At the beginning of 1990, she started acting and dancing professionally in the Boulder Dinner Theatre and the Country Dinner Playhouse in Colorado. Later in Minnesota in a small local theater, she was cast as a character in an unrealized documentary film about beauty pageants titled Drop Dead Gorgeous. Her move to Los Angeles after making her debut on screen as a good-natured but snarky contestant. Leigh began her filming career when she signed an MGM contract in the late 1940s. Her work was noticed by actress and model Norma shearer. She was in numerous acclaimed films in the next decade, such as Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) and Living It Up (a Martin and Lewis-film that was released in 1954).
